20th Century Sports in America excerpt The crack of a bat.
A Slamming Slam Dunk. A golf ball circling the cup before it
drops. A fast uppercut. Spiking the ball. Winning the race. The
crowd cheers.
Sports in America during the 20th century are about winning
and losing, patriotism, image, media, records made and records
broken, role models, legends, entertainment, obsession, and by
the end of the century -- money, money, money. Sports are the
poetry of kids playing in the
neighborhood, soccer moms, and fitness buffs who are walking,
running, swimming, skating, biking, and aerobicizing....
In America in the 20th century sports is about more than just
sports. It's about power, prestige, politics, and money. It's
also about individualism, pride and spirit.
 "Most
games are lost, not won." Casey
