Dance and Music in the 20th Century excerpt American dance and
music are as intertwined as two kids making out on a couch with
the victrola, record player, 8-track, cassette player, CD, or
MP3 player on in the background.
As America entered the new century, society was undergoing
many changes...It was time to shake your shoulders, hold on tight
to your partner, wiggle your hips, and stomp your feet...
Frank Sinatra -- the future Chairman of the Board -- broke
millions of teenage hearts with his hot voice and cool exterior.
Elvis changed everything about music and dance with his sultry
voice and wiggling hips. The 1960s Twist Sensation led teenagers
to the Land of A 1000 Dances. And, virtually every teenager in
America had a transistor radio in their ear. The Beatles and
Rolling Stones had hit after hit. And, Bruce Springsteen was
"the future of rock and roll." In 1980 John Lennon
died, and one year later MTV was born...
"There's nothing they can do to stop this new
solid beat of American music from sweeping across the land in
a gigantic tidal wave of happiness."
Alan
Freed
